"Showdown At The Secret Spot"
2008 Texas Wakesurf Championships

A Wake Outlaws Production
Saturday, June 21st, 2008
Brazos River, Kopperl Texas

Settled along the Brazos River, the first ever Texas Wakesurf Championships was held on Saturday, June 21st 2008. Competitors came from across these great United States to vie for their title; spectators came to just enjoy the sun and watch, as the competitors would put on a memorable show. The weather held out both Friday, practice day and Saturday, competition day. Calm winds and high degrees made it for a “HOT” Texas day both from the riders’ tricks and the temperature.

Indian Lodge was the location and a special thanks to our event hosts, Tim and Barb for ensuring that the layout would provide optimal viewing from shore but calm waters as well. The spectators would also be blown away by the true Texas BBQ talents of Texas local, Darrell Robichaux. Serving everything from pulled pork, brisket, sausage to down home potato salad and beans few would be hungry throughout the day.

The Wake Outlaw Twins, SV240 Enzos Centurions were in full effect; sacked out to give the sickest wake a wakesurfer has seen. Our Centurion Towboats proudly displayed their commitment to wakesurfing. As the day of the event arrived, competitors had completed the practice runs and each anticipated their individual rides. With 45 seconds in each pass, the runs had to be well choreographed to display their skills to the judges.

What is to be said for the riding? It was nothing less than spectacular. It was a great opportunity for the amateurs and those new to wake surfing to see what their potential could be in the sport. Riders ranged from new amateurs to well-known competitors that are a regular fixture at the Worlds and other National competitions. Everything from shuvs, 1080, Air reverse, and backside 3’s were pulled off leaving spectators in awe.

Sponsors would display their commitment to get behind the ever-growing sport with wakesurfers from The Walker Project, Inland Surfer, Triple X and Phase 5. Clothing packages for first place contenders would be courtesy of Under Ground Products (UGP). Raffles would see spectators be able to win everything from wakesurf boards, to Wet Sounds, to Helium, Cobian, Centurion and Anarchy clothing packages. All in all, no one would leave empty handed!

As the day turned to night, Wake Outlaws would award the competitors, announce the Walker Project Team Rider Search Winners and runner-ups, award the Charity Backyard Board build-of for Best Artwork and Best in show. We close out the night in true Outlaw fashion with the band, Full Service gifting the audience with their music aboard a huge flat bed. It surely was a sight to see lit up by bonfire and full stage; the sounds of surfing would come thru the Reggae Rock of the Texas Wakesurf Championships after party.

We’d like to thank all of our sponsors for getting behind this event and making it a memorable occasion for all those involved. Sponsors: Wake Outlaws, Centurion Boats, Wet Sounds, Inland Surfer, Phase 5, The Walker Project, Under Ground Products (UGP), Triple X Surfboards, Scream Marine, Xtrak Inc., Texas Sport Boats, Fun n Sun Boats, Hydrotunes, Anarchy, Fly High, Smed Wakesurfing, Nice-Rack, Helium, Fresh Air Exhaust, H2O Clothing, Scream Marine, Shred Stixx, CenturionCrew.com, Cobian.

A big thanks to WakeOutlaws for putting on such an amazing event. Bryan and I really enjoyed meeting everyone and putting faces with names. What a great group of people to spend the weekend with.

I HUGE thanks to the "Inland Surfers" for all of their generosity and time spent with us!!!! You guys ROCK! (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/Rockon.gif)

The Band and the BonFire were an excellent way to end the Event.

So bummed out that I couldn't make it up there. But packing the house to leave this week, I figured I better do the right thing and wait 'till next time. I'm anxious to hear all the stories and see all the pics! Keep it coming.

We will definitely be posting up pics and debrief of the event shortly. We had to all get in our surfing runs the days following the competition (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/).gif)

Great turn out, great people...definitely made it worth all the hardwork for us at WakeOutlaws!

So much more I want to say...but I guess I should maybe get back to blogging about it?!

The TWC is proof that everything is bigger in Texas. It was one grand event. (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/thumbsup.gif) The bar has been set. Centurion will need to work hard to top this event at the WWSC in Nashville. I would like to give thanks and acknowledgement to those that made this such a great event.

- Loc, Wakechick, WakeDoc, and WakeDiva did an amazing job of putting on the event. Although everybody worked hard, Andrea and her son get my vote for the hardest workers at the event.
-Surfboard manufacturers/Wake Outlaws stepped up big time. At least nine Walker Project boards, four Inland Surfer boards, two Shred Stix boards, two Smed boards, one Phase Five, and one XXX (?) board were given away. Mike Walker from the Walker Project is now going to sponsor Wakesurf_ohio(Robbie Gordon) and Pirate Girl(Becca Payne). Big thanks to Mike Walker
-The twins performed amazingly. (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/Surfing.gif) The wake was great, especially with a little tweaking from the west coast and midwest riders.
-The boat drivers, judges, and photographers should be commended for putting in a hard days work in the 95 degree heat.
-Thanks to Kasey Brewer, Centurion, and the other sponsors for everything they provided for the event. There were so many give aways and prizes, that there wasn’t enough time to give everything away. The Gordon family came home with well over a thousand dollars in gear and prizes!
-The riders did a great job. (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/Surfing.gif) Bri, Sean, and James really tore it up!
-Jeff Page, Wakechick, Sean Gun Show Cummings, Ed Sullivan and Kayley Gordon did a bang up job of announcing the event.
-Big props to Ed Sullivan for bring the video equipment for viewing the riders. Without it, it would have been difficult to watch the competition. Ed should also be commended for sticking to the true spirit of the Charity Backyard Board Build-off and the extraordinary effort he made to get his board to Texas on time.
-The food prepared by Todd and Heidi’s neighbor, Darrell Robichaux, was delicious. Love the barbeque.
-Thanks to “Timbo” and Barb for their hospitality and allowing the event to be held at their resort.
-Thanks to Kayley Gordon for helping to control Jeff P’s and Todd G’s language (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/censored.gif) . They both owe her $100. I’m sure she would be glad to call it even if they would both do something with their hair.
-Big thanks to Naughty Surf Girl and Lake Farmer for taking the Gordons and Inland Surfer crew out on Sunday morning. For some reason we didn’t see the Outlaws on the water in the morning.
-Big thanks to Bri for coaching Kayley and getting her pumped up.
-Full Service put on a great show after the competition
-and last but not least, thanks to Jeff P for scaring all of the Gars away with his hair. (IMG:style_emoticons/wake/shock.gif) Not one competitor was attacked while in the water.

Everybody had a great time. The best thing was meeting everybody and the new friendships that were made. Can’t wait until next year. We will definitely be returning.
