2008 NWL Free-Ride Grassroots Wakesurf Event
Texas Wakesurf Championships

A Wake Outlaws Production
Saturday, May 17, 2008
Lake LBJ, Sunrise Cove, Kingsland Texas

Sponsors: Wakeoutlaws.com, Centurion Boats, Wet Sounds, Fly High, Phase 5, The Walker Project, Texas Sport Boats, Fun n Sun, Nice-Rack, Scream Marine, Cobian, Helium, Gator Boards, and Anarchy

This past weekend was the 2008 Texas Wakesurf Championships Grassroots NWL Free-Ride Wakesurf Event hosted by Wake Outlaws and Centurion Boats. As part of the Texas Wakesurf Championships, a Wake Outlaws production, the initial stop was held at Sunrise Cove nestled along Lake LBJ just outside of Austin, Texas. Competitors from across the great state of Texas came to compete in the NWL Free-Ride Preliminaries Grassroots gala intended for fun, good times, and promotion for the sport of wakesurfing. We began the day with the sun shining down on the competitors and a crowd of spectators would watch, as the riders in each class would begin their runs.

The day would boast some great riding and competition as the “Outlaws” “Desperadas” and “Lassoed” competitors took their runs on the Enzo SV240s for a place in the winner’s circle. We would see some big airs, aggressive carves, hangin-5’s, spins, first-time surfers, best “pose”, and the premiere of the Wake Outlaw “Twins” 2008 Centurion Enzo SV240s.

One of the youngest competitors, Chris Kinsey of San Angelo, Texas an Outlaw Division competitor would wow the crowd on his Liquid Force Custom. His run was composed of carves, kneel downs, fives, and some 3’s thrown in for good measure. He would leave all excited for his progression in the season to come. Becca Payne, Desparadas competitor, would represent Midland, Texas while riding her Walker Project Limited Edition. With her usual smooth ride and grace; Becca would pull off her trademark moves that make her runs memorable. Scott Shroeder of Houston, Texas would represent Outlaws riding his Inland Surfer Chubby performing countless lipslides, carves and 3-s. We have to give an honorable mention to Ali Houston of Canyon Lake, riding aggressively as she fought the Enzo wave and represented her crew.

The Outlaws continued their battle, as Richard McCully of Spring Branch would bring his Phase 5 Drew Danielo in for a session. Boasting some of the most controlled lipslides of the day, Richard gave an aggressive run on the Centurion wave. Residents of the DFW area, Heather and Jeff Bankston would display their talents on a Hyperlite Broadcast and Walker Project 4.5 respectively. The couple showed that attitude, fun and riding style would have them rep’ing well for the Lake Ray Roberts crew back home.

Texas Shreds would bring out Jack Oman to show what is in store for Shred Stixx in the great state of Texas. Jack, riding the Shred Stixx Thresher Shredder would thrown down some of the sickest carves and highest airs. A solid run that would have Jerry Price proud to have him representing their stixx! Not to be out down by his own rider, Rusty Kotzer would show a similar mastery of the Thresher with slides, carves and airs.

Wet Sounds boasted Austin local, Tim White who would make the hot pink Walker Project 4.5 look even hotter. He hit the wave with aggression and muscle in the Best “Pose” contest; showing that his speakers aren’t the only think that kick it!

Clouds would begin to move in, as the goofy riders would load up for their portion of the comp. Continuing into the afternoon, Denise Butler (Naughty Surf Girl) of Flower Mound, Texas would ride her Walker Project F-18 and be followed up by Shay Smedman of Austin, Texas. Shay, riding her Smed Wakesurfing custom board, would show up her wakesurf designer spouse, Matt Smedman giving a run filled with board slides and carves. Tracy Mangold, of Giddings Texas, would show that Lassoed riders can hit it as she surfed her way through the competition. Fellow Lassoed rider, Ron Wade would settle his ride on the Phase 5 Oogle and leave it for the judges to decide. The day would close out with a few drops of rain while Jamie Armstrong of San Antonio Texas, rode his long board and Austin Wade tore it up on the same Phase 5 Oogle as his dad.

There were many more competitors in this competition; we would love to mention you all. Each of you all were key to the day’s success and why we held the Grassroots competition with an emphasis on FUN. Thank you for coming out and representing the great state of Texas.

The most notable portion of the competition would be judged in a class all of it’s own, “The Best Pose”. Each competitor would close their final run with a “pose” that would see distinctive moves and styles unique to the “artist” ermmm rider. Everything from flips, Michael Jackson, muscle flexing and a few “unnamed” poses would leave the judges well, ummm speechless. But it proved to be great fun, as the riders would close their runs with humor.

Again, a special thanks to all the competitors and their family members that came out to join in a day that was intended for fun, family, friends, wakesurfing and memories. We will continue to kick-it in June as the main event, Texas Wakesurf Championships is held along the Brazos. For more information and details: www.texaswakesurfchampionships.com

For the State Championships different than the TWC Grassroots Series, the Texas Wakesurf Championships, are separated into classes. The details and discussions are located in this thread.

The registration for the TWC will close classes when capacity is met for a division so it's critical you sign up early and select SURF or SKIM.

I realized my error right after I posted it!!! Sorry girls...I meant to include you girls too. There's no way the guys could have put together that wrap so well without the help of their better halfs.

Great job to all of the Wakeoutlaws in the planning and execution of the event....you all did a great job!!

Ohhhh…What a fantastic FUN weekend!!!

Thanks to every person that came out this weekend you are truly the inspiration to put together events like this. It was great seeing old friends, shaking hands with new ones for the first time and feeling like I had known everyone for years instead of days by the end of the weekend. I truly look forward to getting out on the water with everyone in the future.

Also a huge THANKS to the River Oaks Lodge it was the perfect base camp for the event.

Sunrise Cove turned out to the be the perfect place to hold the event, BIG Thanks to Eddie.

If anyone is looking for a GREAT weekend get away you cannot go wrong with either location!

Tons of pictures and videos to come.
