WAKESURFING GOOFY FOOT HELP!

HI
I am ocean longboard surfer, for years, strickly goofy foot. I tried wakesurfing first time, on a friends boat, with a 9' board years ago. So, when wakesurfing became popular my husand bought a 5'6" hyperlite.
We have a mastercraft X2, so we surf on the left(passenger side) of the boat. We tried the other side, but the wake is mush, even with the balast adjusted.

We make a great wake for it, my husband and some of our friends are really good, free riding, tricks, etc. But they all ride regular. I have tried many times, regular and goofy, and I can't control the board that well.

Left foot forward is really akward, and I have no control on my toe edge. I end up shooting out to left, and can't make it back into the wake.

Another problem is the board, I can't seem to make the adjustment to this twig of a surfboard! The shortest board I have ever ridden is 8'!

I am riding switch more on the wakeboard. In the ocean, I have only attempted it a few times, unsuccesfully.

I made an indo board, out of one of our old wakeboards, will that help??
Does anybody have any suggestions?

thanks
surfinggrrrl

Praising Northwest Riders Clinics

We received this great message from Cory in Great Falls, Montana about the experience he had at a couple Northwest Riders '08 Summer Tour stops. This is a wakeboarding clinic series sponsored by Malibu Boats and one of our amazing Northwest dealers, Bakes Marine. The clinics are executed by the Northwest Riders.

Here's what Cory had to say about his experience at the NWR Summer Tour clinics...

I am 18 years old and had the opportunity to attend a Malibu wakeboarding clinic in Great Falls put on by Greg Young and Brent Starr of the Northwest Riders. These guys were terrific. They helped me with my technique, I mastered a few tricks, and they gave me lots of confidence. They were 2 of the nicest guys I've ever met. I enjoyed boarding with them so much, that my family took a trip to Lake Blaine Montana to do a second clinic 2 weeks later. We had a great time again. Thank you to Malibu boats for sponsoring guys like Greg and Brent and the Northwest Riders.
The 2009 Malibu Boats Web Site is Up

MalibuBoats.com has been re-imagined and recreated for 2009. The look reflects Malibu's brand of fun with amazing photography and clean graphic design. The new site is 500% faster with a load time of a little more than a second and a navigation structure has been completely redesigned for maximum user efficiency.

The entire site is more user-friendly whether you are a seasoned Malibu owner or just discovering Malibu Boats for the first time. Breadcrumb navigation resides at the bottom of every page so you can get back to the pages you came from easily. The home page is more intuitive with all popular links prominently placed and graphical representations of the four Malibu Boats model series for better informed path choice. Malibu Boats extensive social media site list is linked off the home page. This list includes, this site, the Malibu Boats blog. The 2009 web site also includes video on model pages with more clips to come.

Malibu will be adding Flickr photo galleries along with links to third-party information relating to the boat models with del.icio.us bookmarks. Look for a video enhanced factory tour and additional Malibu Difference pages featuring MaliView, Rider Presets and more. The Malibu Boats web site is a quest for perfection just like Malibu boats. Expect us to keep pushing limits even online.

Tags: Malibu Boats | web site | Flickr | YouTube | social media | photography | boats | wakeboard boat | ski boat | 2009

Banton at Chenga 57

While in Cleveland I got the pleasure of hookin’ up with Adam Banton to ride Chenga 57. Banton has been doing shows in the greater Ohio area for 3 months, kinda going nuts. He always has some weird moves to show me. When we started shooting video, he was rollin’ on his back on the grind ledge.

I am in the middle of making a video for the site, so sit tight, you don’t want to miss this. He has 57 wired, tailwhips, hip hops, meatloaf screams, and down side footplants on the wall. Thanks to Adam, Powell for going bald, and Kerry for runnin’ a sweet place. If you’re in the area, check out Chenga 57 for sure….

Columbus, OH will have at least 9 riders at the WWSC. I think Columbus is becoming the wakesurf capital of the world! Are the Twins still going to be there and if yes, will they be on the water on Friday?

Help with new board purchase

I've been wakesurfing for several months now on a HL Broadcast but have an appetite for more unfortunately I don't have a dealer nearby to demo much (I have surfed most of the Inland Surfers). I do ocean surf regularly and am leaning toward a surf style board. Specifically I've had my eye on the Walker F-18 and Shred Stixx Sixxtreme. I would love to hear anyone's comments or suggestions. Thanks!

Dennis McCoy invited me back this year to judge the Dew Tour in Cleveland. Couldn’t pass this up seeing as I stayed with new judge Dave Freimuth, always a good time. With judging I also wanted to ride the new Chenga 57 and Rays mountain bike park. So I needed to get a car.

Couldn’t believe it was Chad DeGroot. Long story short he hooks up an insane deal and upgrades me. When he pulls the car up i’s a black Mustang. Not exactly bike traveling friendly, but I wasn’t complaining.

This car would peel out everywhere, didn’t even need a wet street. He also had me sign an old Skyway street beat that he painted hot pink (see pic). We road Rays twice—thanks Ray. Managed to find Chenga and it was insane. Awesome bowl and the rest of the park was way to fun. Went out to Panini’s every night and they hooked it up, ridaz working there, holla.

The whole week was fun as hell, layed some blackies (check the pic) road a whole bunch, judged and had the best seat in the house for Dew Tour, saw Chase Gouin ride flat, and wall road the Rock n Roll hall of fame glass windows.
What’s up guys, Vanessa here with some more sweet news from Destin, FL. There was a comp there last month. This comp was one of the last Flow Series stop. This event was a little bit different for me. I had arrived at 10am thinking still had sometime left to practice but I was wrong… :( Practice had ended at 10. I still placed 5th against the guys, which I think is pretty awesome :) … But I still managed to place 1st in the women’s body boarding division :D … Stay tuned for news from my next stop in Pennsylvania.

Malibu Boats Pushing Limits at the 2009 DVD Shoot

The 2009 Malibu Boats DVD Shoot went off last week at Lake Don Pedro in California. The temperatures were in the 100's and we were on fire getting amazing footage of 12 2009 Malibu boats in four days. We captured High Definition footage on three cameras with a small group of crew and talent. The high level of production resulting from the shoot was a direct result of the Malibu factory team, camera crew and pro athletes who attended the event. We saw these people raise their game to get the job done and the footage we have in the can is a shinning example of this effort.

Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes images in the Malibu Boats 2009 DVD Shoot Flickr gallery.

To read this entire article visit the Malibu Boats blog.

Tags: Malibu Boats | DVD | HD | wakeboarding | boating | 2009 | photo shoot | wakeboard boat | Kevin Henshaw | Nick Jones

Ryan Doyle Back From Japan

For the past two years I have traveled to Japan for the sole purpose of touring around the country side promoting one of my biggest sponsors Underground Products, or to most people UGP. And for the past two years this has been the best part of my year. Japan is a beautiful country filled the nicest coolest people I’ve ever met. The wake scene in Japan is huge and everywhere I go I’m surround by crazy different riding spots, eager riding partners, and good times.

This year was a little different then last because we had a winch. So we spent more time driving around looking for unique spots that only the winch could allow us to ride. This year instead of giving the footage to ESPN Japan we kept it so I could make a web vid and show some highlights of my trip.

My trip started by flying to Fukoka, Japan from Manila, Philippines where I was for the CWC wake park worlds. (You can read more about this trip on my gatorboards blog). I had had water in my ear for a few days and I could feel and ear infection coming on when I got on the plane. Kaz, the UGP distributor for Japan, tour guide for the next two weeks and all around super good guy picked me up form the airport with a smile and extreme hospitality everyone in Japan seems to possess. We went to Andre’s house (the guy driving the winch in the opening shot of the vid), had a few beers and crashed.

The next day I woke up and my ear infection had gotten so bad I couldn’t move my mouth without pain shooting through my head. Kaz insisted on taking me to the hospital. I don’t like or go to hospitals too much but Kaz did all the talking and the doctor cleaned my ear out put some gel goop in there and told me to stay out of the water for 4 days, I was so bummed. We spent most of the day chilling at Andre’s shop watching videos and playing Wii Fit. We went across the street and checked out this rice patty spillway spot to winch. As soon as I saw it the doctor’s orders went out the window. It was perfect we wheeled the grinch across the street I stuck an earplug in my ear and walked out the line. I don’t winch that much and when I do I usually am hitting rails. So to get to jam on a mellow drop down was one of the funnest sets of my life.

The spot Kaz and I hit was Shiga, Shimizu City. We met up with Kanzawa at the largest fresh water lake in Japan. Unfortunately it also had the largest rollers in Japan. The only calm water was in the sailboat-parking bay…. So we took out the winch and hit it up. Hahahahaha so much fun. The next day the wind was not so bad so we hit up this little rail Kanzawa made to end out my stay in Shiga.

We spent the next three days in this beautiful little town in the mountains where a local wakeboard tournament was being held. We met up with Kazoo, a UGP wakeskater from Kyushu set up the winch and jammed on this little rail that Kaz had set up. Everyone was stoked to try the winch and it was something cool to watch in-between riders. Next we went to Kagawa to Takamatu City. There I met the TONTONOTN wakesk8 crew. They run a seaport and ride in the channel out front. These guys are what wakeskating and riding is all about. Super into the scene, into learning new tricks and helping each other progress. It was fun riding in the salt and I love talking about and teaching wakeskating to riders that are really into progressing.

They had built a little up flat hub rail so the last day I was there they put it in the sand near shore and we set up the winch and I didn’t realize it until they started hitting it that none of them had ever hit a rail before. So the rail coach in me kicked in and by the end of the day they where killing it. Before I left for Osaka they made me an honorary member of TONTONTON and gave me a shirt, I was stoked. Osaka was our last stop and the one I was looking forward to the most. My really good friend Matsukawa lives there and we where going to stay and ride with him. The first few days it was the Japanese armature nationals so we went there Kazoo and Matsu ended up getting 1st and 3rd. I was not allowed to ride in the comp but I got to do a little demo and that was really fun everyone pumped me up.

Click for even more pictures!
Ryan Doyle in Japan

My favorite day in Osaka was when Kaz, Matsu and I went to the Yodogawa River. Kaz filmed and Matsu and I took turns busting lines under and around this crazy bridge. After all the winching it was nice to “just ride”.

The support for UGP in Japan is always overwhelming thanks to everyone that hooked us up and a huge HUGE thanks to Kaz for taking such good care of me and setting up such cool spots for me to ride and chill at. So go check out the vid I made of my trip or if you watched it first then that’s it…until next year.

More fin theory and design

In discussing how fins work in a multi fin pod, there are two types
of flow, laminar and turbulent, I do believe.

No doubt most everyone has seen the eddies and rolling off the side
of your boat as you wakesurfing. It can also bee seen off the back when
your boat is unladen and you're blasting somewhere. That is a layer of
turbulent, rolling, swirling water thats releasing off the hull of the boat.
That layer of turbulence is being caused by viscous drag or surface drag.

On your board you go from laminar flow at low speeds (paddling speed in the ocean) to turbulent flow at high speeds. Turbulent flow is not a bad thing because that layer of turbulence insulates the bottom of your board from the main body of still water and acts almost like ball bearings under your board. It helps speed.

While turbulent flow is great for the bottom of your board, its a nightmare for
your fins.

If a plane flys through turbulence it can lose altitude rapidly as the wings can't
function as effectively in turbulence. Similarly if your fins have to deal with turbulence they don't function as well, lose hold, encounter more drag, especially at angles of attack (like turns up and into the wake).

A cut-away in the trailing edge lets the turbulent water pass under the fin, so less of the fin has turbulent water pushed up against it in turns. The part of a normal fin (without a cut-away) in contact with the board won't act efficiently, have more drag, less hold. The cut away allows the fin to operate in a zone away from the board in cleaner (less turbulent) water, allowing it to perform more efficiently.

This theory is seen frequently in nature on the fins of fish and on the wings of some birds.

The "cut-away", if you will, on the fins of a sail fish:

http://forums.wakeoutlaws.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=1553

New Rope/Board

Hello everyone. First time poster. My family recently picked up wake surfing at the end of last summer behind our Calabria Pro V. Our board is an Inland Surfer Red Tide (reccomendation from Surfdad on Tige Owners last year). Our rope is a Proline or Straightline (not sure which) with thick braiding at the end.

Here is the issue. My wife and her friends are having trouble with the size of our board and the rope. The braiding on the rope is so massive that they can't grip it tightly. Combine that with their difficulty sinking the Red Tide on take off and they are really getting frustrated.

Of course, I (at 210 lbs) don't have any problem with the rope or the Red Tide. I am able to get up easily and ride without the rope for quite a while. In fact, I think I am ready to "upgrade" to a more agile board if such a thing exists for someone 200+ pounds.

First, I'd like to buy a new rope to replace the braided one so that the women can get up easier. However, I don't want to pack two ropes in the boat. So, I need one that will work for everyone. Suggestions?

Second, I'd like to buy a second board that will work better for the women. If possible, I would also like the board to work for me so that I can start learning how to do some tricks on a more agile board. Suggestions again?

Thanks for your comments/suggestions in advance.

Devlan

Dave Freimuth will be out there judging and I’m sure showing the Dew ridaz what pegs are as none of those knuckleheads run pegs. (INSERT SOAPBOX SPEECH HERE:) Hey kids!!!! A bike without pegs is a race bike. Put some pegs on and learn something. Speaking of pegs…DO SOMETHING WITH THOSE BIKES!!!! IF I SEE ONE MORE FLAT BLACK BIKE I AM GOING TO SNAP!! I PAINTED MY BIKE IN PROTEST OF THE BORING BIKES IN BMX (STEPS DOWN FROM SOAPBOX)

Aside from that…I’ve been chilling for 6 days since getting home from the X-mess. BK rode awesome and ended up in 4th in BMX street. I got yelled at by a lot of security guards and I publicly humilated a few as well. After the gaymes I hit up San Diego for a week to ride and shoot photos for DK, snorkle, and get my sweet sweet surf on. It was a nice little vacation. Here are some pics. See you crazy kids in Portland.

9-year-old boy told he’s too good to pitch

By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN, Associated Press Writer Aug 25, 8:37 pm EDT

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player— too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.
Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.
But Vidro says he didn’t quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league’s field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.
“He’s never hurt any one,” Vidro said. “He’s on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?”
The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.
“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”
Jericho’s coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league’s administrators.
Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.
“I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something,” said his mother, Nicole Scott. “The whole objective in life is to find something you’re good at and stick with it. I’d rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner.”
League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.
“He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.”
Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.
“Facing that kind of speed” is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.
League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.
League officials say Jericho’s mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.
“I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho’s mother exhibited Wednesday night,” Noble said.
Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.
League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.
Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho’s parents Monday to discuss legal options.
“You don’t have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it’s wrong,” he said. “Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?”

Kevin O’Brien of the NBL sent us some shots from China the other day. Here’s what he had to say:

“Well, the Mondrians were a big hit in China. The Olympic athletes, UCI, Tourists, CBC Staff, everyone wanted them.
Five days and no riding, this mother effer is really taking its toll on me. What’s one to do with all this spare time on their hands? FedEx managed to drop two fresh new skates to my door, despite Wednesday’s foul weather.
Boat of the Year Streak Continues

Malibu Boats received a 7th consecutive Boat of the Year Award from PowerBoat Magazine on May 3rd, in Los Angles, CA. The awards winners were selected after the magazine's rigorous Performance Trials in Parker, AZ, Sarasota, FL, and San Diego, CA. More than 40 performance boats were evaluated independently by two teams.

This year’s PowerBoat Magazine Boat of the Year award was granted to Malibu Boats for the new 2008 Wakesetter 23 LSV.

This honor makes Malibu the only boat company in the history of PowerBoat Magazine to have earned seventh Boat of the Year awards in a row. Dan Gasper, Director of Research ad Development, accepted the award for Malibu Boats during the Product Excellence Celebration in LA.

Since its inception, the pride Malibu has taken in its products has netted recognition throughout the industry. The company has accumulated 18 Boat of the Year Awards and 25 Product Excellence awards. Yet, the restless spirit and motivation for perfection never stops.

Paul Singer, Vice-President of Sales of Marketing, explains this phenomenon. "I have said it before... These awards are a great pat on the back for us, but as soon as the high fives are spent, we get right back at it. There are so many more innovations that our engineers are working to perfect. They are competitive by nature and these awards just push them to develop that next industry first."

The 2008 award winners are profiled in Powerboat's special June issue.

Camp Periwinkle, helping out the Kids

For the last couple of years WakeDiva and I have been helping out The Periwinkle Foundation, which enriches the lives of children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses through exciting camping and recreational programs, with the Camp Periwinkle Lake Program. The Lake Program brings the kids from Camp Periwinkle in groups of 50 to hit Lake Somerville in and behind the boats of volunteers for half a day. There is a morning and afternoon crew of campers for Thursday and Friday givng all the kids at camp a chance to go to the lake.

This as always was the best year yet, everything was well organized, the local EMS crew even came out and set up a first aid station just in case someone needed medical care (you can see them in some of the pics), I was very impressed. This year they had a couple of small generators powering a sound board giving the counslers the ability to make announcement and play some tunes for the kids. The generators also powered cooler fans that misted ice water into the breeze to help cool the campers in the hot Texas heat. The lake was calm, the weather was perfect and the array of boats that volunteers brought out was outstanding! We met several new crews and had the chance to hang out with them and some old friends and crews as well. Over all it was an outstanding time and we are already looking forward to next years camp!

Up close pictures of the kids can not be posted without a release but, so it took me a while to weed out the ones we could use, the pictures below will show the good times had by all.

See the rest of the pictures in the 2008 Camp Periwinkle Gallery.

Everyone pulling out from the launching area on Thursday morning to head accross the lake to Base Camp.

Pulling into the No Wake Zone of Base Camp

Looking back at the Base Camp cove Thursday at lunch

Boats lined up around the cove waiting for afternoon campers on Thursday

Cooling off Thursday waiting for the second groups of campers

Pulling out Thursday afternoon with campers in tow.

VPracer with the Big Yellow Bannana, one of the kids favs.

greenhead carrying the camp photographer to shoot pictures of the fun

The Full Results for WWA Worlds BMX Olympic Race Rained Out

Both the men’s and women’s semi-finals were postponed due to rain, and are scheduled for Friday (for us, that should be tonight). That works out for our own Kyle Bennett, who could use that extra time to rest—he got dislocated his shoulder during the quarter-finals. And Mike Day is already chilling in 1st place.

If you missed them live, you can catch the quarter-finals here; they’ve also got a bunch of shorter highlight clips. It looks like coverage should be around 10 or 11 PM EST tonight! Check your listings to make sure you don’t miss the semis and finals!
