Just recently I've built a winch. 6.5hp Briggs with a 40 chain centrifugal clutch 11 tooth to 60 tooth sprocket. We finally got to trying it and it won't pull fast enough, too much tension and the clutch isn't holding, just wants to burn up. Where do I go from here, I talked to the guy from my local go-cart shop, he said it was all in how it is geared that the slip clutch should work fine if I can get my gear ratio right. Suggested I put in a jack shaft to up my ratio, Is this info accurate or should I try with a torque averter. If anyone could help me with my dilemma, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced, Coute23

Coute23, I moved your topic to Wakeskating. There are a few guys here that have built winches (LiquidStunts...and I believe WakeDoc is working on one.) so they might be able to help yoU!

how much you weigh? how big is your spool? why #40 chain? is the motor new or broken in? are you trying to deep water start or dock start? have you checked your throttle spring? is the briggs stock or modified?

answer me these questions and i'll tell you how to fix it.

i run a 6.5 briggs and i can easy deep water start 175lbs skaters, and i've pulled a guy (from a dock start) who weighs 235 lbs.

Yeah i was wondering about the clutch's when i was building my winch, but i quickly realized that the torque converter is the way to go. That would be my recommendation but hey not all of us have the money for it, so be more specific and maybe we can help.
