I'm planning on moving to Houston late summer and my goal is to keep my boat on a lift somewhere. I don't necessarily have to live on the water but I'm tired of trailering my SAN. I've heard the water is pretty contaminated on Lake Houston, but haven't done any research into how bad it really is. I'm assuming it can't be that bad since people ride on it all the time. I was also told that Lake Conroe is full of stumps but I'm assuming a little home work can alleviate that problem too. Just wondering what people in the area recommend?

Best place to live near the water, keep the boat, and ride, etc...

Thanks, Lee

where in houston are you working? and what is your housing budget? if you make a healthy paycheck, and don't mind a long commute, then check the Northwest side. lots of private ski lake neighborhoods.

Well I haven't quite decided where I want to live as of yet. I'll be flying in and out of Houston International quite often but also working at Ellington AFB. Lake Conroe is quite a hike from Ellington so I was trying to find somewhere a bit closer. As far as price, I'm hoping to stick around 250k or less mark so I doubt I'll be able to get anything super nice on the water. Plus the property taxes are extremely high if you're living on the water I've heard. I'd be more than content living near the water while keeping my boat on a lift some where... even if I have to pay some old dude to use his boat house each month that doesn't use it any more. You mentioned northwest there are some private ski lakes? Where about would those be? Haven't seen them on google maps... Thanks again for your help! -Lee

i can't remember where ellington AFB is, and i'm to lazy to look it up. but if you wanna check out magnolia (pretty far north) "greater houston area" haha then you can easily get a house in a private lake neighborhood (not on the water), but access to a CLOSE lake.. still in your budget....

and IF your a pilot you could commute (via your own plane) from Hooks airport in Spring/tomball area...

you may be better off listening to wakedoc, he's more realistic.. (down to earth, very calm and composed and soft spoken.. (IMG:http://forums.wakeoutlaws.com/style_emoticons/wake/censored.gif) .... i like to think big. (IMG:http://forums.wakeoutlaws.com/style_emoticons/wake/cheers.gif)

yeah, that's pretty far from the base. The AFB is near Nasa, SE of Houston. Lake Houston would probably be better if I'm going to be working out of both airports. I like the way you think though... own plane, etc... one day, ha. In the mean time I'll settle for getting paid to fly. Can't afford to do it the other way around quite yet!

NEVER TO SOON!! check this out! http://www.vansaircraft.com i'm building the RV-7(tailwheel, tip up canopy).... just the way i like it!! 200hp IO-360, C/S prop, Dynon & AFS EFIS/EMS, battery backup, a few redundant steam guages, full IFR capabilities, garmin 496 w/ XM weather and traffic, linked to dual axis TruTrack autopilot!

she'll be a heck of a ride!! +6/-3 aerobatic category

and if you wanna talk to other builders/owners/pilots.. http://www.vansairforce.com

i'm currently on a Navy deployment, but i'm starting to build the empennage as soon as i get back in town!! (IMG:http://forums.wakeoutlaws.com/style_emoticons/wake/cheers.gif)

btw if you don't like tail wheel, the 'A' model of the planes puts the little wheel in front

Lightning,
Funny you mention that... I've been eye'ing the RV8 for quite some time. I definitely need to wait for my piggy bank to get a bit heavier though. Once I get in the area I'd love to check out your RV4... or at least the progress you've made on it so far. So do you fly for the Navy? I just got out of Active Duty AF and got into the Guard. Lines up better with my airline career and such. Now it's just a matter of getting settled in around the Houston area. Keep in touch and maybe we can hit the lake when you get back... you can show me the ropes around Lake Houston if you don't mind. Take care, Lee

P.S. WakeMC, thanks again for the pointers on where you'd recommend in the area. I'll definitely have to check them out once I roll into TX.

Lightning,

i originally fell in love with the RV-8, and i also LOVE the -4, but i can't really do any of this without Jenna's support (future wife after i get out of navy).. and she wasn't to keen on staring at the back of my head everytime we flew.... so i settled on the -7 and i am really excited about it.

i'm not currently in houston.. (in italy for deployment,) but i gotta go back to Jacksonville, FL (for a year when i get home), but i can hook you up with a few excellent builders in your area.. Paul (i'll save last name for a PM) works for NASA and lives there in Friendswood, and flys out of 7XS0 (private airpark). He's an Aerospace engineer for nasa, as well as being an EAA tech councillor/flight advisor.

there are plenty more.. oh, and Paul has a BEAUTIFUL RV-8, "Valkyrie"

no i don't "FLY NAVY", i'm an AME (airframe structural mech, saftety/egress "specialist" haha)

and the "progress" of my -7 is non existant yet.. i have the preview plans.. as soon as i get home from deployment (and find a place to live) i'll put in the order for my empennage, then QB wings and fuse as i have more time and money, then fwf kit and engine, then finish kit...

it'll take a few years before she sees the "wind above the trees", but i'm in no rush.

You should go to http://www.gcwa.com - It is it the local wakeboarding club. There are some threads on where to live that you might find helpful.

I've seen some houses in your price range if not a little cheaper in Walden on Lake Houston and Atascocita Shores. A couple of these home are not directly on the lake but have canals to their backyards with lifts or if not you could put one in. Check HAR.com for Houston area homes.

At one point I was looking into this option but moved to The Woodlands and been riding the Trinity River ever since…

I saw a great sign in one of the Dallas bathrooms that said... Make sure you flush, Houston needs the water! (IMG:http://forums.wakeoutlaws.com/style_emoticons/wake/cheers.gif) It was funnier when I lived in Dallas....
